Water-source heat pumps: wells, conditions and costs
Checked
A water-source heat pump takes heat from groundwater. It requires a proven supply of suitable water and an approved way to handle the cooled water.
An existing well alone does not establish suitability, permission or the cost of a complete system.

Water quantity and quality
Check sustainable yield, temperature and water chemistry through appropriate investigation. Deposits, corrosion and clogging can affect heat exchangers, wells and maintenance.
A one-off observation of water in a well is not evidence of long-term supply at the required flow. Include pumping tests and the effects of abstraction and return in the design.
Abstraction and return
Water abstraction and discharge must follow the applicable permissions for the parcel and purpose. Do not choose the return location yourself or assume that an existing well's permission covers heating.
Geological investigation and documentation are separate preparation tasks. An approval does not guarantee the source's yield or quality.
The whole system's consumption
Include wells, source pumps, heat-exchanger protection, controls, heating distribution and hot water. Electricity for pumping groundwater can substantially change the result compared with compressor COP alone.
Ask for a plan to monitor flow and temperatures and to clean the system. Accessible filters do not make a groundwater source maintenance-free.
What the quotation must include
Separate the heat pump from investigation, design, wells, pumps, distribution, water treatment, electrical work, commissioning and administrative work.
The collected offers lacked sufficient model, VAT or well details for a complete Slovak price range. Missing information is not zero. Compare the same useful heat demand and the entire system's running cost.
Common questions
Can an existing well be used? Only after yield, quality, permitted purpose and water return have been checked.
Is water-source automatically the cheapest to run? No. Pumping, maintenance and the initial investment can change the comparison.
