Monobloc heat pumps: differences from split systems

Checked

A monobloc has the whole refrigerant circuit in the outdoor unit. Pipes carrying water or an approved heat-transfer fluid run into the house. In a split system, refrigerant runs between the units and the water is heated in the indoor unit.

When choosing, focus on protecting the outdoor water circuit during a power cut, the position of the unit and the full scope of installation. The monobloc label alone does not guarantee a lower price or lower consumption.

Compare monobloc and split

Where the refrigerant and water circuits are

Monobloc and split are two constructions, not two different heat sources. In an air-to-water heat pump, both take heat from outdoor air and transfer it to the heating water.

Conceptual comparison of outdoor and indoor equipment in monobloc and split systems.
A monobloc keeps the refrigerant circuit outdoors; a split runs it between the outdoor and indoor units. The image explains the principle, not the installation wiring or pipework. Illustrative image.

A monobloc does not mean nothing is needed inside the house. The system may need an indoor hydraulic module, controls, a hot-water cylinder or other accessories. Check them in the specific quotation.

The difference between compact and split equipment is explained in SIEA: How to choose a heat pump (in Slovak).

Monobloc versus split in practice

Refrigerant workWith a normal hydraulic connection, the sealed refrigerant circuit is not joined on site. Work on it during servicing is a job for specialists.Installation includes professionally joining the refrigerant circuit and checks according to the manual.
Frost protectionCovers the liquid in the outdoor circuit as well, and what happens in a power cut.The outdoor connection carries refrigerant. The water system, unheated spaces and condensate still need protecting.

General principle according to SIEA; practical requirements are illustrated by two precisely defined manuals below. They do not automatically apply to all equipment.

Compare efficiency at the same outdoor temperature, heating-water temperature and climate zone. Ask about winter output for the exact model and system, not based on the monobloc or split label.

Protection against frost and power cuts

In a monobloc, part of the water circuit is outdoors. Active frost protection that relies on the pump, controls or an electric heater needs power. Being told that it “has frost protection” is therefore not enough.

Ask how the system is protected during a longer power cut and when the house is left unoccupied. The installer should propose a solution approved for the model and explain its limitations.

Placement and service clearances

Before ordering, have the unit, pipework, service space and condensate drain drawn on the site plan. A free area by a wall does not automatically meet the requirements for airflow, noise and refrigerant safety.

With R290, the protective area around openings and ignition sources is also assessed. Vaillant /6 distinguishes the protective area, service clearances and condensate drainage. A single number from a drawing is not a general distance from the neighbours.

Two manuals, two specific systems

Vaillant aroTHERM plus /6 · R290 monobloc

Manual 0020326638_04 applies to VWL 105/6 A and VWL 125/6 A, including the listed 230 V variants. It covers frost protection, condensate and clearances. Do not transfer these requirements to the /8.1 generation or to other brands.

Daikin Altherma 3 R W · R32 refrigerant split

Manual 4P629081-1A · 2020.08 for EHBH/X04+08EA/EJ6V+9W covers the refrigerant connection, room conditions, the water circuit and the indoor unit's drain. A split therefore does not remove the requirements for hydraulic design and safety.

Ask the installer for the manual that matches the rating plate and its revision. A similar product-range name does not guarantee the same installation rules.

Is a monobloc cheaper?

It can be, but this cannot be concluded generally from different packages. Below are two separate offers from one seller, with different output, equipment and scope of work. They are sorted by price; this is not a comparison of equivalent systems or a market average.

Examples with installation, before subsidy
Exact systemPriceNote and source
Hyundai HPMO-08-D2L1H3-A1B · monobloc 8 kW€4,988including VATNo domestic hot-water cylinder in the scope of supply. Includes standard installation, a bracket, anti-freeze valves and connection to the heating system. Košice, Prešov and Michalovce and surrounding areas; price subject to a site survey. Excludes the main electrical supply, foundation and building work; check other exclusions in the offer.ECO Technologies, checked 20 October 2026
Panasonic KIT-WC09J3E5 · split 9 kW, 200 l cylinder€8,490including VATIncludes a 200 l cylinder, standard installation, connection up to 5 m and commissioning. Excludes the main electrical supply and protection, foundation, building work and any circulation pump. Confirm additional materials, refrigerant and service area with the company; price subject to a site survey.ECO Technologies, checked 20 October 2026

The price difference is not a “split surcharge”: one offer includes a hot-water cylinder, the other does not list one. A comparison should also include frost protection, hydraulics, the electrical supply and building work.

Questions for the installer before signing

Common questions

Will a monobloc freeze in a power cut?

The risk depends on the temperature, the length of the power cut, the connections and how the outdoor circuit is protected. Electrically powered protection alone does not cover a period without power. Ask for the solution for your specific system to be explained.

Does R290 come without qualification requirements?

No. R290 is a flammable refrigerant, and a sealed circuit does not mean you can service it yourself. Leave installation and servicing to a company qualified for the equipment and the work involved. The Vaillant manual cited here also sets out safe-working requirements.

Is a monobloc always cheaper or more economical?

That is not a rule. The exact model, operating conditions and the full scope of supply decide it. Compare quotations with the same cylinders, accessories and work, and efficiency figures under the same conditions.

Does a monobloc need an indoor unit?

It depends on the system. The whole refrigerant circuit can be outdoors, but controls, hydraulic accessories or a cylinder may remain inside the house. Check the space requirements before choosing.
