Pool heat pumps: capacity, season and costs

Checked

A pool heat pump is a separate appliance for heating swimming-pool water. Choose it for your pool volume, cover, target temperature, season and local conditions.

Its advertised maximum output at warm air and water temperatures does not establish performance in spring or autumn.

Size it for the pool and season

Pool volume is only a starting point. Heat losses depend on exposed area, evaporation, wind, the cover, desired temperature and how quickly the water must warm up.

Ask for output and COP at conditions that match your planned season. A figure measured at warm air and high humidity is not interchangeable with a cooler-weather test.

A cover and realistic running costs

A cover reduces evaporation and changes heat demand. Include its use when comparing systems; a heat pump cannot compensate economically for every uncovered-pool loss.

Estimate electricity from heat demand and efficiency under the expected conditions. The filtration pump's electricity may be additional. Published COP is not a guarantee of a full season's costs.

Flow, bypass and positioning

Follow the exact unit's flow limits and hydraulic instructions, including any bypass. Confirm compatibility with pool-water treatment and the required separation from chemical dosing.

The outdoor unit needs free airflow, service access and condensate drainage. A small enclosed space can recirculate cold exhaust air. Include noise at neighbouring properties in placement decisions.

Check VAT, delivery, plumbing, valves, electrical protection, foundation, commissioning and winterisation. Seller stock and promotional prices need confirmation before purchase.

Pool heating is a different use from supported domestic space heating. Do not automatically deduct a household heat-pump subsidy from a pool appliance's price.

End-of-season care

Follow the manual's drainage, frost protection and storage instructions. A frost-damaged heat exchanger is not prevented simply by switching the unit off.

Ask who will service the appliance and which water-treatment and maintenance conditions affect the warranty.
