Heat pump electricity consumption and running costs

Checked

Estimate annual electricity from useful heat and a seasonal factor with a known boundary. In the simplest whole-system model, electricity = heat ÷ SPF. Cost depends on the actual tariff and fixed charges.

The calculator uses your inputs. It does not choose a heat-pump size, tariff or energy-assistance entitlement.

Heat output is not electricity consumption

kW describes how quickly heat is supplied; kWh describes energy over a period. A nominal 8 kW rating is not annual electricity consumption and should not be multiplied by every hour in the year.

Enter useful heat for space heating and hot water. Gas energy on a bill includes boiler losses and needs conversion on the same energy basis.

Environmental heat and electrical input combine into heat output.
Heat delivered combines ambient heat and electricity. Illustrative proportions, not a model's rating. Open full size.

Seasonal factor, backup and auxiliaries

Whole-system SPF includes all the electrical consumption within its boundary. Do not then add backup and circulation pumps a second time.

In the component method, calculate space heating, the resistance heater's share of useful heat, hot water and additional auxiliaries separately. The resistance share is a percentage of delivered heat, rather than electricity.

Catalogue SCOP is measured under standardised conditions. Actual flow temperatures, weather, hot water and backup can change the system result.

Your electricity and cost scenario

Calculations run in your browser. Enter your own data; an empty field does not mean zero. You can use a decimal point or comma and spaces between thousands.

Heat demand

Heat demand after accounting for the old heat source’s efficiency, rather than energy taken directly from a bill.

Separate demand. Enter zero only if hot water is excluded from the comparison.

For example, a design after insulation, a measurement period or your own illustrative scenario. State which consumption the factor includes.

Consumption calculation method

Catalogue SCOP is not automatically this factor. It must include space heating, any hot water included, backup and auxiliaries.

Your electricity tariff

Use final rates including applicable distribution charges and VAT. Off-peak hours are not the share of energy used off-peak. Enter only the increase in fixed charges compared with your current situation.

Tariff, assistance and fixed charges

Use final per-kWh prices including applicable network charges and VAT. Off-peak hours do not establish the share of energy used off-peak. For a single-rate tariff, enter the same rate in both fields.

Include only the increase in fixed electricity charges caused by changing heating. Do not automatically charge the entire existing household subscription to the heat pump.

For the dated VSD D3 Aktiv example, the relevant ampere-based formula uses 25 for a 3×25 A breaker, rather than 75. Do not transfer that basis to another network or tariff. Enter your own annual increase from the applicable contract.

Common questions

Can SCOP predict my bill? It can be an explicitly labelled scenario, but not a guarantee. Check climate, water temperature and consumption outside the test boundary.

Does 20 hours off-peak mean 83% of energy is off-peak? No. The share depends on actual operation.
